Buffalo Valley Regional Police moving to new headquarters

LEWISBURG — Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department will have a new home sometime in spring, signing in October a 10-year lease with the Union County Housing Authority for almost 9,000 square feet of space at the authority’s Industrial Road building.

The police department will pay about $6,000 per month in rent, Housing Authority Director Jere Engle confirmed Wednesday. The rate is roughly $12.50 per square foot.

That amount will rise once the housing authority finishes renovations, estimated at about $200,000, to accommodate the police department’s needs.

The housing authority is financing the cost of that work to the police for 15 years at a 2 percent interest rate. Engle said.

The regional police lease the current headquarters at 2009 W. Market St. in Lewisburg, and the landlord wants the building back after the lease expires June 30, said Henry Baylor Jr., an East Buffalo Township supervisor who sits on the police commission.

“The police will be getting more space for a little more than what they’re currently paying,” Baylor said, adding the police likely would move in the middle of May.

The new location also allows for expansion should the police find they need more room.

The regional police, which will mark two years of operation in February, already were finding the Market Street location cramped, Baylor said.

Buffalo Valley police are moving into what was the CareerLink office space at the Industrial Road building, Engle said.
