Former state auditor general holds door open for gubernatorial bid

HARRISBURG — Former Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner says he’ll announce by the end of this year whether he plans to seek the Democratic nomination to run for governor in 2014.

Wagner, a former state senator from Pittsburgh who won two statewide elections as auditor general, fielded reporters’ questions Monday about his political future at a Capitol news conference in Harrisburg.

Wagner would be the only candidate from western Pennsylvania in a Democratic primary field that has already expanded to eight people who want to challenge Republican Gov. Tom Corbett’s re-election bid.

At the news conference, Wagner also sharply criticized state House Republicans for blocking a $2.5 billion-a-year transportation funding plan already approved by the Senate. He says the increase is sorely needed to fix deteriorating bridges and highways.
