Cruelty charges for Middleburg man who shot a bull

MIDDLEBURG — A 26-year-old borough man allegedly shot a 310-pound bull that wandered into his grandmother’s garden.

Andrew D. Hestor’s tale of guarding his grandmother’s produce was undermined by the fact that after the animal died, he took the bullet-riddled carcass to a butcher and tried to get it processed.

The butcher called the animal’s owner, Roger Moyer, of 5340 Troxelville Road, Beavertown, who reported the incident to police. Hestor was charged with theft and animal cruelty.

Moyer notified state police at Selinsgrove in late August after he received a call from Richard Keiser, owner of Keiser Custom Butcher Shop in McClure, reporting a dead bull likely belonging to him was brought into his shop and that the animal had three bullets in it.

Keiser told The Daily Item he recognized the bull as a riding bull, or rodeo bull, owned by Moyer.

District Attorney Michael Piecuch said the cruelty charge was levied against Hestor because of the inhumane way the bull was killed.

“We have every reason to believe the bull suffered,” he said. “It’s bad enough shooting someone else’s animal, but doing it in a way that it suffers is cruel.”
