Penns Creek resident dies in Route 104 accident

MIFFLINBURG – A 52-year-old Penns Creek resident died in a traffic accident at 5:56 a.m. today on Route 104 near Mifflinburg, according to the state police at Milton.

Tpr. Kevin L. Warren identified the victim as Leon R. Bowersox Jr. He said Bowersox was pronounced dead at the scene by Union County Coroner Wanda Walters.

Warren said Bowersox was traveling north on Route 104 in Limestone Township when he lost control of his 1993 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck on the icy road and began sliding in the southbound lane. The left front of his truck struck the left front of a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Jeffrey R. Maurer, 40, of Mifflinburg.

The crash occurred in the southbound lane 1,083 feet south of Route 334, Warren said.

Warren said both drivers were wearing lap and shoulder belts.

A helicopter from Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, was called but later canceled after rescue personnel arrived on the scene.

Route 104 was closed for several hours while the investigation was under way.

Assisting state police at the scene were rescue personnel from the Mifflinburg Hose Company, the Mifflinburg Ambulance Service, the Mifflinburg Police Department and the state Department of Transportation.
