Troopers: Pal’s grab blamed in fatal crash

SUNBURY — A 20-year-old backseat passenger grabbed the steering wheel of a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire, causing a fatal crash near Sunbury in July, state troopers at Stonington report.

Hasan Mustafa Abuomar, of Mount Carmel, has been charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault and involuntary manslaughter in the July 16 death of Marcelle Renee Barber, 18, in Upper Augusta Township.

During an initial investigation, three passengers — Tyler J. Karycki, 21, of Mount Carmel, Brianna L. Bailey, 18, of Kulpmont, and Abuomar — were interviewed by troopers, but none said Abuomar grabbed the wheel, court documents said. One of the passengers began to tell relatives that Abuomar had grabbed the wheel and the vehicle lost control, police said.

Troopers interviewed the other passengers again and were told Abomar grabbed the wheel, causing the car to leave Snydertown Road about two miles east of Sunbury at 1 a.m. The car flipped. All three passengers were injured.

Barber, a 2013 graduate of the Mount Carmel Area High School, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Abuomar will appear before District Judge Ben Apfelbaum at 1 p.m.  on Jan. 29.
