$42G raised for cancer awareness

SUNBURY — When confronted with a diagnosis of breast cancer, Julie Rockey says she could have viewed her predicament either positively or negatively.

“It was one of those events that you have a choice to make,” the Northumberland 32-year-old said Saturday. “So I took it and ran with it.”

On Saturday, so did 969 participants in the Ta Ta Trot, a breast-cancer awareness 5K race that Rockey founded three years ago.

Through runners’ registration fees and business donations, the race on Saturday, part of Sunbury Celebration, raised $42,000 — 147 percent more than it did in 2011 and 1,172 percent more than it did in its inaugural run in 2010.

“It really is an emotional roller-coaster, but all good emotion,” Rockey said. “It’s a complete team and community effort. Numerous folks came at this from every angle. There are folks in this area who think we can never make something big and great.”

Sixty-two runners raised $3,300 in 2010 and 655 participants raised $17,000 last year, Rockey said.
