Two homeless after fleeing burning house near Mifflinburg

SUNBURY — MIFFLINBURG — The cause of a late-night Monday fire in Union County has been ruled as undetermined, according to an area fire chief.

The fire, at 1895 Penn Creek Road near the intersection with Boop Road in Lewis Township, began shortly after 11 p.m., said Mifflinburg Fire Chief John Heiges.

The homeowners, Max Field and his wife, were home at the time and were able to make it out of the home safely, Heiges said.

“She heard something and looked out onto the porch and hollered for her husband,” he said. “He saw it was burning and they fled the house.”

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the home’s enclosed porch “was completely involved in fire,” he said.

“They had a one-hundred pound propane cylinder sitting up against the house and that burned the fire up through the roof,” he said. “The kitchen sustained heavy damage as well ... The the whole house sustained a lot.”

The couple has insurance and was staying with family, Heiges said.

The home may not be a total loss, but “going to take some work if, it’s livable at all,” he said.

Crews were at the scene until 2:30 a.m., Heiges said. The American Red Cross was also on the scene to help the family.

A State Police Fire Marshal inspected the scene Tuesday morning, but was unable to determine a cause, Heiges said.
