Selinsgrove borough building and library ceremony set for Tuesday

— SELINSGROVE — Standing in the foyer of the new borough building and Rudy Gelnett Memorial Library on Wednesday afternoon, resident Ken Wochley said his late friend would have been proud to have his name connected to it.

“Wow. This is top shelf,” Wochley said inside the newly opened building at Pine and High streets. “I knew Rudy Gelnett. He was quite a guy, and this is really quite a tribute.”

The borough offices have been open for a week and the library is scheduled to open Wednesday. A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The $5.9 million renovation and construction project began last year. The price tag for the new library was $3.6 million, which was aided by a $1.25 million state grant and $450,000 in contributions from Gelnett and the $5 million trust fund he left his hometown when he died in November 2010.

A frequent visitor to the library before his death in November 2010, Gelnett was well-known for riding his bicycle around the borough. One of his old bikes now hangs on a wall inside the completely refurbished library.

On the other side of the building, the borough offices include a spacious meeting room with large windows overlooking the Commons at Market and Pine streets and basement community room outfitted with a large screen television and kitchen.

Borough manager Paul Williams said the building has achieved LEED certification for its geothermal heating system and vegetative roof.

“It truly is a green building,” he said, showing off the new internal systems.
