SUNBURY —  “Marcy,” a single mother of four in Sunbury, said she turned to the Salvation Army for help this holiday season because learning disabilities have interfered with her efforts to find work.

Marcy, who asked that her name not be used, said that she had once worked at a local amusement park, but she has been unable to find work in years.

Marcy said she does not know how to read and has difficulty writing. She has family in the area, but with the economy being so challenging, they are not in position to help her or the children — daughters, 16 and 12, and sons, 15 and 13.

The family has turned to the Salvation Army for assistance for several years. Last year, the children each received about three presents, Marcy said, including games, books and puzzles.

The family manages with the income provided by Marcy’s Social Security disability payments. But that money does not provide Marcy much in the way of money to cobble together Christmas presents for the children.

The Needy Family Fund, sponsored by The Daily Item, Sunbury Broadcasting Corp. and Susquehanna Bank, raises money during the holidays to aid the Valley’s less fortunate. It is administered by Salvation Army citadels in Sunbury and Milton. Donations can also be left with Susquehanna Bank offices in Sunbury, Selinsgrove, Milton, Lewisburg, Shamokin West, Shamokin East, Kulpmont, Mount Carmel and Pillow.

This year’s goal is $75,000. Today’s balance is $73,329. Recent contributors are as follows: Ladies Sunday School Class, First Baptist Church of Sunbury, $50; Brann & Light P.C., Paul W. Brann, J.D. Terry W. Light, J.D. Darlene S. Holtzapple, Sharon D. Rishel and Linda L. Everitt, Lewisburg, $550; Beta Sigma Phi, Sunbury, $30;
