Arsonist hits former Milton Elks lodge

MILTON - An arsonist started a fire on the first floor of the former Elks Lodge, but smoke alarms alerted residents of the building to the blaze, and they extinguished it before firefighters arrived, police said Sunday.

The fire was discovered at 8:49 p.m. Friday. Tenants of the building at 21 N. Front St. called in the alarm.

A tenant was able to put out the fire using a extinguisher before emergency personnel arrived. The Milton Fire Department ensured the fire was extinguished and that the building was clear of smoke. Tenants were allowed to return to the building later that night.

Anyone who may have information on the fire or who may have been driving or walking by the area between 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. is asked to contact police.
