Coroner: Deaths of Vennie and Mark Boyles resulted from natural causes

— MILTON — The deaths of a Milton woman and her son - cases that sparked an intense police investigation in November - both resulted from natural causes, the Northumberland County coroner announced today.

Vennie Boyles, 80, was found dead in her Park Lane home on Nov. 4. Police questioned her son, Mark Boyles, 55, in the days following his mother's death and released him from custody.

Mark Boyles was found dead 17 days later — on Nov. 21 — inside a parked car in Milton.

Northumberland County Coroner James F. Kelley said Wednesday that both deaths resulted from natural causes.

Vennie Boyles died as a result of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, Kelley said. Although an autopsy performed on Nov. 6 revealed trauma to her scalp and right hand, the injuries were not lethal, investigators determined.

Mark Boyles died from cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease contributing to the death, the coroner said.

Kelley said family members have been contacted and advised of the autopsy results.
