Juveniles arrested in Milton school burglary

— MILTON — Juveniles have been arrested in last fall’s burglary at the James F. Baugher Elementary School, authorities said.

Officials did not release many details about the youths, only saying they are juveniles and that they have been charged in relation to the break-in at the Milton school.

A second investigation into vandalism at the White Deer Elementary School in New Columbia remains open, although Milton borough officers, who investigated the Baugher case, have shared information with state police at Milton, who are investigating the Union County incident. The White Deer school is part of the Milton Area School District.

Milton police Sgt. Curt Zettlemoyer notified the school district Monday of the arrests and credited school resource officer Tammy Smith with helping to crack the case.

“This is a clear sign of the commitment between Milton Area School District and Milton Police Department,” Zettlemoyer said in the statement to the district.

Milton police could not be reached for further comment Wednesday.

The Baugher break-in occurred Sept. 8, just weeks after two classrooms and a teacher’s lounge at White Deer were damaged.

In December, police released images captured on security cameras that showed two suspects, who appeared to be young males, one wearing red shorts and a red T-shirt and the other wearing black shorts and a blue T-shirt. The suspects were seen walking through one of the school’s hallways and into a classroom.

Zettlemoyer said in his statement that police tried to emphasize to the juveniles that their actions caused a lot of worry in the community.

“I pointed out to the juvenile actors and their families how the staff at Baugher and White Deer felt violated because of their actions,” he said. “I made sure that I also mentioned the efforts of all the persons involved in cleaning up the school to ensure the doors remained open for students who were there for educational purposes.”

Trooper Matthew Burrows said he didn’t want to comment on whether the incidents are related, but said the investigation into the vandalism at White Deer is ongoing.

“We are moving forward,” he said. “I would suspect that this could come to a resolution sometime soon.”
