ELYSBURG - A fire at a building behind Vic’s Transmission closed a section of Route 54 on Sunday afternoon and required fire departments from across the Valley to bring the blaze under control.
“There’s at least 10 companies here,” said Bob Dluge, assistant chief of Elysburg Fire Company. “We have companies from all over the place.”
The call for the fire came at 4:05 p.m. Dluge said he was about a block away and could see “a large volume of smoke coming out of the whole structure.”
The fire departments, which included Danville, Overlook, Coal Township and Riverside’s Southside Fire Company, had the main part of the fire knocked down about 10 minutes after arriving and then firefighters began searching for smaller fires in the structure.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Sunday evening.
Route 54, which is North Market Street in Elysburg, was closed from Center to East Mill streets.
At around 4:30 p.m., firefighters had to evacuate part of the building because it was structurally unsafe.
Dluge was unaware of anyone being in the building at the time of the fire.
The building had once been the site of Reliable Glass Co., said Dluge, but he did not know who owned the building.
The structure was located almost immediately across the street from Elysburg’s Fire Department, which is at 1 E. Mill St.
