Snyder County fire leaves three people homeless

— MEISERVILLE — An early evening fire Wednesday destroyed a two-story house along Route 104 in Snyder County, left a family of three homeless and killed two dogs.

More than 50 firefighters from seven companies responded to the 6:20 p.m. call and remained on the scene in Chapman Township for four hours, Port Trevorton Fire Chief Doug Lauver said late Wednesday night.

The blaze caused an estimated $125,000 in damage, Lauver said, but the home was insured.

Jim Swartz, Veronica Swartz and their son, Skyler Swartz, lived at the home, Lauver said.

The Red Cross is assisting the family, which is staying with relatives, Lauver said.

Lauver could not immediately say what caused the blaze, but said a state police fire marshal would be on the scene this morning. The three residents were not inside the home when the blaze erupted, Lauver said.

The fire began just a few hundred yards from the popular Meiserville Inn.

A large crowd gathered as crews arrived and battled the blaze.

Fire departments from Port Trevorton, Middleburg, Fremont, Liverpool, Selinsgrove, Shamokin Dam and Kratzerville responded.
