Who's in the News?

Audrianna Beattie: The teen and her family won the latest, and possibly last, bout with the Line Mountain School District on Monday when U.S. Middle District Judge Matthew W. Brann issued a preliminary injunction preventing the school district from taking any action that would interfere with the girl’s efforts to wrestle on the boys’ team. The judge found if he did not grant the requested injunctive relief, Audrianna would suffer irreparable harm in her development as a wrestler.

Ryan Wary: The senior broke a Shikellamy indoor track & field record on Saturday at the Lebanon Valley High School Invitational. Wary finished fourth in the 55-meter sprint, clocking in with a time of 6.84 seconds even though it was just his third time competing in the event. Wary already owns the Shikellamy outdoor records in the 100 dash and 300 hurdles.

Joe McGranaghan: The Shamokin Dam mayor said he has heard no support for allowing six 35-foot high electronic billboards in Shamokin Dam. McGranaghan is considering vetoing council’s vote — the measure was approved 5-2 by council recently. Safety and aesthetics are the overwhelming issues raised by residents and business owners, McGranaghan said, but he’s also considering the “legitimate right” advertisers have in requesting to install billboards. As mayor, McGranaghan has the authority to veto a vote by council, which the seven-member council could override with a minimum of five votes.

Gerardo Garduna: The artist displayed some of his latest paintings at Mondragon Bookstore in Lewisburg on Monday. Garduno’s work is not the typical, brightly colored art which is popular in the United States. Instead, the Mexico City native, uses traditional Mexican folk art symbols among balanced, crisp backgrounds of black and white with grades of gray. Using color “is not my thing,” said Garduno, 35, preferring to work in black and white and gray scale because. Garduno moved to Lewisburg, the hometown of wife Sasha Susman, 25, after their September wedding.
