MILTON — Milton is prepping for construction to begin this summer on the Project 2017 initiative, which will revamp and refresh Milton’s downtown core.
Last week, the borough submitted a $500,000 grant application to the state’s Department of Community & Economic Development to help with the project, which has already received a Transportation Alternatives Program grant for $495,250, which was matched with $195,000 in local funds - a combination of borough money and funds raised through The Improved Milton Experience, said Milton Borough Manager Chuck Beck.
T.I.M.E. and the borough have partnered on the Project 2017 initiative.
Wednesday, Milton held a public meeting to fulfill the last part of the requirements for the DCED grant. All community members present were in support of the project, Beck said.
The grant application was then submitted Thursday, Beck said.
Project 2017 will revamp the streetscape in downtown Milton from the railroad tracks to Front Street on Broadway and along Front Street from Walnut to Mahoning Streets.
“We’re going to repair and replace the curbing and sidewalk, remove the existing trees, put all new streetlights in.”
The new streetscape will also include new trees, crosswalks, feature underground wiring and fix some storm water drainage issues, Beck said.
Construction on the project is expected to begin this summer or fall and will occur in phases to minimize traffic issues, Beck said. Work is expected to be completed by fall 2016, in time for Milton’s bicentennial celebration in February 2017.
“We’re hoping to have it done for that celebration,” Beck said.
Construction and work will be coordinated around the annual Milton Harvest Festival, Beck said.
The first phase of the project is the work on Broadway, beginning near the railroad tracks, Beck said. The timeline will depend on the funding stream for the project, he said.
The new streetscapes will help to keep the downtown historic district vibrant and beautiful, Beck said.
“It’s the historic value of the municipality,” he said.
