Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA visits, reads at Janet Weis Children's Hospital

— DANVILLE — Patients at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital got a dose of star power on Wednesday when they were visited by the current Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA.

Sydney Robertson, a 16-year old resident of Williamsport, chatted with several patients during her visit and even took time to read a story to one. Each patient also received an autographed picture of the pageant winner.

“I wanted to make the kids smile” and take their minds off being in a hospital, she said. “I want them to feel special.”

Nine-year old Luvly Davis McGraw, of Scranton, talked with Sydney about stuffed animals and her favorite school subject, art. Luvly showed her a poster she made out of water colors while staying in the hospital. Luvly’s mother, Amy McGraw, said it was nice of Sydney to visit.

Gabriel Carpenter, 6, Wellsboro, told Sydney about his favorite animals, pigs. In return, she shared a story with him about a competition she entered when she was younger where she had to catch greased pigs. It was very hard, she said with a laugh.

Sydney swapped stories about dogs with Samantha Darrup, 12, of Kulpmont. Samantha told Sydney about her two dogs, Ginger and Bear, while Sydney talked about her family’s 13-year-old dog that now needs help getting up and down stairs. Samantha also showed Sydney her necklace, which she made while being treated at Janet Weis.

Samantha said she was happy to have the chance to meet a beauty pageant winner in person.

“I always watch them on TV (beauty pageants), but I never met one who did them,” she said.

For 2-year-old Auron Benson, of Athens, Sydney read his favorite picture book, “What Will Hatch?”

Sydney said she was grateful for the chance to interact with the younger kids because it’s something she never experienced as the youngest child in her family. “I never got to be around little kids,” she said. “It makes me happy I can put a smile on other people’s faces.”

Sydney enjoyed her time at Janet Weis so much that she’s already planning a return trip. “I’d love to come back,” she said.
