Man convicted in York County robbery and murder of homeless man

YORK  -  A central Pennsylvania jury has convicted a man of second-degree murder and robbery in the shooting death of a homeless man authorities said was targeted as he was sleeping in his car.

Twenty-four-year-old Shamar McCowin faces a mandatory life term without possibility of parole after York County jurors convicted him Friday in the November 2012 death of 46-year-old Edward Green.

Authorities alleged that McCowin and another man were looking for someone to rob in York and spotted Green, a restaurant cook living in his car behind a house where some friends lived.

Prosecutors alleged that McCowin opened the door and shot Green, and the robbers took off in his car and later torched the vehicle.

Defense attorney Marc Semke blamed the shooting on his client’s co-defendant, who is awaiting trial.
