U.S. Army honors local National Guard battalion

WILLIAMSPORT -- The Department of the Army awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC) to the 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armored Regiment of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

The headquarters based in Lewisburg with units throughout North and Central Pennsylvania was recognized for exceptionally meritorious service during its deployment to Afghanistan in 2008 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  

The Battalion deployed with more than 700 Pennsylvania Army National Guard soldiers and provided security operations throughout Afghanistan.  

MG Wesley E. Craig awarded the MUC during the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team ceremonial mess, which took place at the historic Genetti Hotel in Williamsport.  

The ceremony was hosted by Col. George M. Schwartz, and was attended by several hundred soldiers and guests.  

The brigade ceremonial mess is a formal event to acknowledge the recent achievements of the brigade and assigned battalions, as well as honors the history of the military unit.

Several local elected officials such as U.S. Rep. Thomas Marino and state Rep. Rick Mirabito were in attendance.

LTC T. A. Starkoski, Jr., commander of the 3rd Battalion, 103rd Armored Regiment noted, “The Army recognized these soldiers not only for their exceptional duty but for the sacrifice of their families and community which is the reason why we serve.”
