Sunbury man jailed on kidnapping charge

— MILTON — A Sunbury man was charged by police with kidnapping after he allegedly took a 3-year-old girl at gunpoint Monday night from her home in Union County.

The girl was found safely at a convenience store in Sunbury, and the suspect, Darian Simmons-Walton, 19, was apprehended by police, arraigned and placed in the Union County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

According to a state police document, Simmons-Walter went to the child’s home at 308 Timberhaven Drive in Kelly Township and at about 5:15 p.m. pointed a gun at Shakiel Rice, 21, who was home with the youngster. After pointing the gun at Rice and verbally threatening him, Simmons-Walter took the girl and fled, troopers said.

Police later discovered the girl was the daughter of Simmons-Walter’s girlfriend, but he was prohibited, by court order, from having any contact with the child.

After his capture, Simmons-Walton was arraigned in district court in Lewisburg.

Besides the kidnapping count, he was charged with interfering with the custody of a child, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, terroristic threats and simple assault.

The girlfriend’s name was not released. Details of Simmons-Walton’s capture were not available.

State police at Milton were assisted by police officers from Sunbury, Point Township, Northumberland and Shamokin Dam.
