CSIU gets $900,000 federal grant to help support women and children

— MONTANDON — The Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit board has accepted a five-year $900,000 grant from the federal Administration for Children and Families.

The money will be used to support homeless expectant or parenting women, ages 18 to 22. It also will provide for housing of up to four young women and their children at a pre-determined Shamokin residence.

Besides providing shelter, CSIU staff will coordinate support services to help participants graduate from high school and continue on to higher education or careers. The home will be staffed by a live-in house manager, as well as several case managers.

The program is open to women in Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.

In other business Wednesday, the directors unanimously approved a proposed 2013-14 program and services budget of $69.9 million. The budget is a compilation of budgets for programs and services for clients across Pennsylvania and in other states  It includes activities related to special education, corrections education and early childhood education; adults and families; customized training and technical support; grant development; and central support services. It is funded by grant awards, contracts and service purchases.
