SHAMOKIN DAM — Nearly one-quarter of the borough’s business revenue comes from those who live outside the Valley, according to a two-month survey that revealed  a love-hate relationship with the 47,000 vehicles that travel Routes 11-15 daily.

What Mayor Joe McGranaghan most surprising in his study, which he conducted in August and September, were the strong feelings about traffic on Routes 11-15.

“Obviously, businesses want traffic to their establishments,” McGranaghan said. “On the other hand, at heavy traffic hours, it needs to be controlled. We have an excellent police force of three, which is good for a community of about 1,600 residents. But in conversations with our residents, we learned that they want to see a stronger visual presence of police on the Strip.”

McGranaghan sent a questionnaire to all commercial, service, medical and hospitality businesses in Shamokin Dam.
