— MILTON — A Milton man was charged Tuesday with possessing $350 worth of cocaine after a traffic stop on Route 147.

Troopers said Joel Manuel Colon-Echevarria, 23, of Mahoning Street, and a friend were found with 11.6 grams of cocaine and more than $100 in cash in January.

Colon-Echevarria was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Richard Cashman and committed to the Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, in lieu of $25,000 bail, according to court documents.

Colon-Echevarria was riding in a car with a friend when the vehicle was pulled over along Route 147 for erratic swerving and failing to use a turn signal, police said.

When police approached the vehicle, Colon-Echevarria appeared to be nervous and kept looking at the driver of the vehicle, officers said.

When police obtained the driver’s permission to search the vehicle, they found an empty plastic baggie in the center console and a bag containing a white, powdery substance, later identified as cocaine, police said.

Police also found Colon-Echevarria to be in possession of $101 in cash, according to court documents.

Colon-Echevarria later told police his friend gave him $350 to buy cocaine, which he obtained at Milton Village, according to court documents. Colon-Echevarria said the friend picked him up, and when police pulled the pair over, the driver handed Colon-Echevarria the baggie of cocaine, which Colon-Echevarria shoved under the seat, police said.

Colon-Echevarria has been charged with one felony count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and a misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance, according to court documents.

His companion was not charged in the incident.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 26 in Milton.
