13 from Lewisburg Dance Conservatory to perform at Orange Bowl halftime

LEWISBURG — Thirteen members of the Lewisburg Dance Conservatory will be among 400 performers at the Orange Bowl halftime show on Friday.

The dancers, ages 12 to 20, under the direction of Jayme Klinger Host, went through a dress rehearsal at the conservatory on Sunday. This is the second year in a row that dancers from the conservatory have been invited to perform at the Orange Bowl, Host said. The dancers, Host and two chaperones will be leave for Baltimore today to catch a plane that leaves at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

They will then train with dancers from across the country to continue learning the halftime performance routine and to learn about dance from other professional producers, choreographers and instructors.

“It’s my way of bridging them from the local dance community to the national dance community,” Host said.

The dancers had a great time last year and had a chance to connect with many other dance professionals and students.

The featured performer of the 2014 Orange Bowl is country singer Dierks Bentley, with choreography provided by Mandy Moore of the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance.”

The Lewisburg Dance Conservatory received the choreography about a month and a half ago, and the dancers have been practicing ever since. Among the new elements the dancers will have to learn when practicing at the stadium will be how to avoid the marching band and the show’s pyrotechnics. The routine is about nine minutes long.

“They’re very excited to get to work with other choreographers and perform on a national venue,” Host said.

The fact that the dancers will get to perform in front of 70,000 fans is incredible, she added.

Host’s daughter, 13-year old Talia Host, is one of the conservatory dancers who will be going to her second Orange Bowl performance. said of last year’s trip. “We learned a lot.”

Kaitlyn Carey, 14, be going to the Orange Bowl for the first time. She’s a little nervous, but she’s also looking forward to working with all the other choreographers and dancers.

“I’m excited for the warm weather,” she added.

Including airfare, the trip cost about $1,300 per dancer, Host said. Money was raised earlier this year by selling car wash tickets, pottery and kitchen pans.
