PPL sets new all-time usage record

The Daily Item

— SUNBURY - PPL Electric Utilities set an all-time usage record Tuesday, with 7,784 megawatt-hours being used between 5 and 6 p.m.

That usage broke the previous record of 7,577, set in February 2007, said PPL spokeswoman Teri MacBride.

However, that hour was not the only usage that exceeded the 7,577 mark Tuesday, according to PPL statistics.

A total of four hours broke that all-time record Tuesday. The others were: 7,600 megawatt-hours were used between 7 and 8 a.m.; 7,775 mega-watt hours were used between 6 and 7 p.m.; and 7,726 megawatt-hours were used between 7 and 8 p.m.

PPL credited customers for keeping demands lower than they could have been, with PJM Interconnection - which operates the power grid in several states in the region - calling for customers to conserve electricity when possible.

"Individual actions to conserve power provided the necessary cushion to survive the frigid temperatures," MacBride said.
