— SUNBURY — Motorists driving north on Route 61 toward Sunbury may recieve a traffic citation if they use the one lane that is open to southbound traffic only, the state Department of Transportation warns.
Preservation work on the Route 61 Shamokin Creek Bridge near the Hamilton Underpass just outside of Sunbury has started.
The contractor closed one lane of traffic and is detouring northbound traffic around the bridge (traffic heading into Sunbury.
The signed detour follows Black Mill Road, Snydertown Road and Eleventh Street.
The Pennsylvania State Police will be monitoring the detour to ensure traffic is following the proper construction traffic patterns. PennDOT strongly advises motorists to follow all construction traffic patterns for their safety and the safety of other travelers. Motorists who risk violating the northbound detour not only risk their safety, but could be cited with a traffic violation, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation said.
Southbound traffic (only) is allowed to travel over the bridge throughout the duration of the project.
Following the preservation work, the bridge will be opened to unrestricted traffic by August 6.
