The secretary of the Navy late Wednesday agreed to have the USS Somerset commissioned in Philadelphia, said Somerset County Commissioner John Vatavuk, one of a number of officials pushing to have the ship placed into action in Pennsylvania, where the passengers of Flight 93 fought back against terrorism.
Vatavuk said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told him that the USS Somerset is an important ship for the Navy and our nation.
“Commissioning her in the port of Philadelphia will make the event even more meaningful,“ he told Vatavuk.
“Once I learned that it was possible to commission the Somerset in Philadelphia, it was the obvious choice for me to make.“
Louisiana and Maryland were the other options.
