Line Mountain students mourn death of recent graduate

STONINGTON — Students at one Valley high school are mourning the death of a recent classmate after a weekend accident turned fatal.

Jared Wood, 18, of Trevorton, a 2012 graduate of Line Mountain High School, died Sunday at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville following a one-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon along Schwaben Creek Road in Upper Mahanoy Township.

State police at Stonington said Wood was a passenger in a car driven by Aaron Rothermel, 21, of Trevorton. Their car was traveling west when it veered off the road and struck a tree. Rothermel and another passenger, an unidentified 17-year-old, escaped serious injuries.

High school principal Jeffrey Roadcap found out about the accident Saturday night and alerted teachers at the school, said Lon Balum, a guidance counselor at the school.

Balum said the school’s Student Assistance Program or guidance office is prepared to help any students struggling with the loss.

“We have a social worker and two guidance counselors available for students,” he said.

School officials had no further comment Monday.

Wood graduated with honors in computers at Northumberland County Career & Technology Center and was a member of the Line Mountain football and basketball teams in high school, according to information provided for his obituary, which will appear Wednesday.

Wood is survived by his parents and step-parents, Heidi Whitley, Jessica Trader, David Wood and Nicholas Norris.
