Traffic stop yields haul of drugs, cash

DANVILLE — An Edwardsville man has been charged with cocaine and heroin possession and other drug charges after the vehicle he was riding in was stopped for traveling twice over a double yellow center line.

Mahoning Township Patrolman Chad Thomas charged Jason Riegel, 31, with three counts of possession of heroin, cocaine and prescription pills, six counts of  possessing illegal drugs including heroin, cocaine, Oxycodone, Lorazepam, Klonopin and Clonazepam, 20 counts of prohibited acts for use or possession or intent to use drug paraphernalia and four counts of manufacture, sale or delivery of drugs.

According to the charges, Thomas observed the vehicle Jan. 19 on Woodbine Lane.

Another police officer saw Riegel shove something under his right leg after the vehicle was stopped at the entrance to Geisinger Hughes Center. When Riegel got out of the vehicle, police observed a small plastic bag containing what appeared to be crack cocaine.

Police said Steve Ebling was driving the red Pontiac Grand Am owned by Riegel. Ebling’s driver’s license had been suspended, according to police.

Police found a large amount of money in Riegel’s left front pants pocket. Fifteen pills were found to be Clonazepam, three pills were determined to be Klonopin, two pills were found to be Oxycodone and one pill was Lorazepam.

Also found were a small plastic bag containing a brown substance suspected to be about 1.3 grams of heroin, 29 packets of suspected heroin in a small bag and a smaller amount of money in Riegel’s front right pants pocket. Police said the cash totaled $1,496.

Riegel also told police there were more drugs in his vehicle and that he “was making his rounds through Danville doing his business,” police said.

Police obtained a search warrant for Riegel’s car Jan. 21 and found additional items including a silver metal pipe, a clear plastic round container with white residue, a clear cigarette wrapper with 10 green pills, a Mr. Coffee grinder with white residue, 80 clear empty plastic bags, a bag containing 85 plastic baggies, two Pennsylvania Lottery tickets, a metal spoon, a metal pipe, a white plastic dowel rod with residue on, two scales, a plastic container containing white residue, a plastic baggie containing suspected marijuana or spice, a plastic container containing 56 prepackaged glassine packets of heroin and three baggies of heroin, an Acetaminophen container with white powder and a pill container with two plastic baggies with suspected cocaine.
