Escapee lands in the arms of Sunbury police officer

SUNBURY — Shortly after emergency officials dragged a vehicle to a stop, its driver — who abandoned the moving Ford Taurus near a fire station after crashing into a pickup truck with police on his tail — leaped over a fence and into the waiting arms of officer Brad Slack.

Meter reader Jim Souder, who was with Slack in the cruiser at 4 p.m. Thursday, spotted Edwin Santana, a Sunbury man sought for nearly two years on a parole violation.

Souder told Slack he thought he saw Santana, an absconder from the Northumberland County Parole Department for 19 months, driving the Ford Taurus, Sunbury police said.

Slack waited for Santana to pass him on Fifth and Market streets, and confirmed Santana was behind the wheel, Cpl. Brad Hare said.

Santana hit the accelerator and began whistling through stop signs on Line, Reagan and Packer streets, and Edison Avenue, police said.

Slack stayed in pursuit as the chase hit South Front Street toward Veterans Memorial Bridge. That’s when Santana smashed into a pickup truck and drove on with Slack on his back bumper, police said.

Santana turned on Linden Street, and slowed just enough so he could jump out, Hare said.

The car, with a passenger inside, rolled past the Americus Fire Company, where surprised EMTs and firefighters ran after the vehicle and brought it to a stop.

Santana fled and began weaving in and out of yards, police said.

Slack and Souder ran after him and separated to try to box Santana in, police said.

It was on River Avenue where Souder trapped Santana into going into a yard and jumping a fence, Hare said.

Unbeknownst to Santana as he scaled the fence, waiting on the other side, with open arms, was Slack, who made the arrest, police said.

The entire incident lasted fewer than 10 minutes, police said.

Santana was wanted on a DUI violation, police said.

Santana was turned over the adult probation department and charges for Thursday’s incident are pending, Hare said.
