— DANVILLE — At least a dozen cats perished in a midday Wednesday fire along Route 11 in Point Township, according to fire officials.

The blaze at 3845 Point Township Drive - situated just between Route 11 and the Susquehanna River near Wrays Riverside Campground - started at about 11:15 a.m. and firefighters were on the scene until nearly 3:30 p.m., said Point Township Fire Chief Jim Geise.

The home is most likely a total loss, Geise said.

The cause of the blaze was undetermined and the fire marshal will be coming to help determine a cause, Geise said. However, the fire is not considered suspicious.

“He’s just going to see if he can help me find a cause,” he said.

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire, but the one-story residence was home to “a lot of cats,” Geise said.

“More than a dozen, probably,” he said.

All perished in the fire, most likely due to smoke inhalation, Geise said.

The homeowner was visiting family in Allentown at the time of the fire, which began in the back two bedrooms of the residence, Geise said. The home was not just a seasonal residence for the homeowner, who was “in and out” of the home throughout the year, Geise said.

The fire caused some minor traffic congestion in the area while crews worked to put out the flames.

Numerous local crews responded to the call, including: Point Township, Northumberland, Mahoning Township, Danville and Upper Augusta Township fire companies.
