Police: Watsontown area man fatally shot family pet

— WATSONTOWN — A 69-year-old Watsontown man faces charges of cruelty to animals after he allegedly shot and killed a 2-year-old pure bred German Shepard that wandered onto his property.

Wayne M. Vanblargan of 7340 State Route 54 in Delaware Township allegedly fired two rounds from a .22-caliber rifle at about 1:50 a.m. today, killing the dog, state police at Milton said.

The German Shepard named Rayne, was the family pet of Shawn and Kristy McNett of East District Road in Watsontown and their four children, ages 12, 9, 5 and 2.

Police said the dog activated motion lights on the Vanblargan property and Vanblargan went out to investigate. He walked outside and apprached the dog, coming to within 15 feet of the animal before he fired his gun, police said.

Charges will be filed against Vanblargan before District Judge Richard Cashman of Milton.
