MILLMONT — At least 50 firefighters endured 32-degree temperatures and a steady wind while battling a blaze at the Barnyard Restaurant on Wednesday night.
The inferno on Route 45, about six miles west of Mifflinburg, could be seen for a mile after it began around 9 p.m. in an exhaust fan over a dishwasher, said a worker who asked to remain anonymous.
Four employees were inside the restaurant when it closed at 8 p.m., the employee said.
Firefighters concentrated on a propane tank to the east side of the restaurant, directing a steady stream of water on the white, cylindrical container.
The worker said employees failed to stop the blaze with a fire extinguisher. Flames spread to the front and east sides of the one-story building; and part of the rear of the structure had collapsed.
About 25 people work at the eatery, the worker said, adding that none were injured.
Firefighters from Winfield, Milton, Selinsgrove and Mifflinburg were among those to respond and remained on the scene after 11 p.m. Additional details were unavailable at deadline.
