— SHIPPENSBURG — Valley boys brought home 11 medals and girls captured seven at the two-day state track and field championships in Shippensburg that ended Saturday. Included in the medal count was a gold by Selinsgrove sophomore Courtney McCartney, who took first in the Class AAA shot put on Friday.

The boys took three fourth-place medals, a fifth, a sixth, three sevenths and three eighths. In addition to McCartney’s gold, the girls took a silver, two fourths, a fifth and two sixths.

The biggest surprise among the Valley contingent occurred Saturday afternoon when Milton, up from Class AA to the much more competitive AAA, took its 400-meter relay team, seeded 22nd out of 24 teams, to a fourth-place medal.

The unit of Tyrel Kling, Brandon Rogers, Trevor Zimmerman and Chris Reuss, qualified out of a tough field in Friday’s preliminaries, then took fourth in 43.13 seconds.

The other boys’ medalists on Saturday were Southern Columbia’s Luke Rarig, sixth in the AA 110 hurdles; Southern’s Joey Kleman, fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200; Lewisburg’s Sean Walker, fourth in the AA 1,600; Danville’s Tyler Vella, eighth in the 1,600; Southern’s Cody Pavlick, fifth in the discus; the Lewisburg 400 relay team of Will Sumfest, Walker, Nick Scullin and Udoka Eze, seventh in the AA race; and the Southern 3,200 relay team of Dylan Swank, Jansen Ring, Tony Chiviaroli and Andrew Steely, eighth in the AA race.

The latter also won a medal in the triple jump on Friday.

On the girls’ side, McCartney won a second medal Saturday afternoon, taking fifth in the discus; and Lewisburg won the AA 3,200 relay with a team of Emily Maxwell, Allison Graham, Maddie Scarr and Jenna Farmer.
