Court News: Purse snatcher pleads guilty in Montour County

DANVILLE — A Danville man apologized to a woman for snatching her purse May 29 in a supermarket.

“I apologize sincerely. I am not a person to steal,” Kyle T. Tamecki, 24, of 248 E. Diehl Road, told Julia Enright before he pleaded guilty to theft Tuesday. Tamecki represented himself during his preliminary hearing.

”I was addicted,” Tamecki said of heroin that he and his wife had been using for three months. “I was healthy for three years,” he said.

He said his wife, who is pregnant, is in a rehabilitation facility.

Tamecki said they started using prescribed painkillers, which led to heroin.

District Judge Marvin Shrawder placed him on probation for 20 days to one year and ordered him to pay a $300 fine. He said Tamecki can be released from the Montour County Jail as long as he has a home plan suitable to the county probation department. He also will be subject to random drug tests, has to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation and will have to comply with recommended treatment.

There was no restitution to the victim since the purse was recovered from a potato bin at Giant Foods on Church Street.

“You have got to get treatment immediately,” Montour County District Attorney Rebecca Warren told Tamecki.

“My dad wants me to go to an in-patient center,” he said.

“Do it for yourself. You need professionals to help you,” Warren told him.

When Danville Sgt. William Wilt III charged him, Tamecki admitted to taking the purse from a shopping cart and discarding it in the produce section after attention was drawn to him.

Enright told police her purse was in the front part of a shopping cart when it was stolen.
