Victims in double fatality near Elysburg still not positively identified

ELYSBURG — The two victims of Monday’s fiery one-vehicle crash were both men, according to Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley.

Neither victim has yet been positively identified.

The older model pickup truck they were riding in struck a tree, flipped onto its roof, slid and caught fire.

The truck was destroyed by flames and the victims badly burned along Rushtown Road between Logan Run Road and Bellas Hollow Road in Rush Towsnhip, Northumberland County.

Kelley said he was trying to locate X-rays of the two victims.

He said some jewelry on one of the victims has helped with identification.

Kelley said he wasn’t going to release the causes of death until the two are identified. “We have the cause and manner for both,” he said.

The coroner said he didn’t know how long the identification process would take.

He said he updated Cpl. George Ritchey, investigating officer from the Stonington barracks, on Tuesday.

One victim was found under the truck, and the second victim was inside the vehicle. Both had to be freed using a rescue tool, fire officials said.

Skid marks showed the truck had been traveling in the direction of Logan Run Road.

The Elysburg and Southside fire companies responded along with ambulances from Danville and Elysburg.

Ritchey could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
