Son charged with stealing antiques

WATSONTOWN — A son sold his mother’s antiques to buy heroin while his mother was away from the house attending a funeral, according to police.

Ernest Welch, 41, of Watsontown, has been charged with theft and receiving stolen property after the Aug. 6 incident, police said.

Welch was living with his mother, Christina Showers, 66, of Watsontown, at the time, and when Showers left to go to a funeral, Welch stole an antique lamp and candleholder from the residence, police said.

Welch then traveled to Williamsport and sold the items for $110, which he used to buy heroin, police said.

Charges have been filed in district court, according to state police at Milton.
