Shakespeare Road just off Route 45 reopens later today

SUNBURY — MILTON — A $978,723 bridge replacement project on Shakespeare Road is nearing completion, with the new bridge scheduled to open to traffic later today.

The contractor is completing the blacktop paving today. Pavement markings, guiderail installation and approach-roadway shoulder backup also will take place on Monday, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said.

Once the new bridge is in service, the detour will be lifted.

The previous, single-lane, 73’-long bridge was built in 1926 and was classified as structurally deficient. The new bridge was built to modern-day standards and is wide enough to carry two lanes of traffic.

The bridge carries Shakespeare Road over Chillisquaque Creek, just off Route 45 and about three miles east of Montandon.

Any project clean-up work will be completed by prime contractor Don E. Bower, Inc. by Nov. 15.
