Middleburg awaits extradition of teenager in church break-ins

MIDDLEBURG — Two of the Valley’s 18 church break-ins since April may soon be solved, according to Middleburg police.

John J. Shaffer, 18, of Middleburg, was charged Saturday with burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief for the June break-ins at St. Paul’s Reformed Church, Beavertown, and Beavertown United Methodist Church.

A laptop taken from St. Paul’s was traced to a buyer in South Carolina, who cooperated with police, authorities said.

Charges were filed against Shaffer, who was found in Collier County, Florida, after he and a friend asked for directions to the beach during a hurricane warning, police said.

Shaffer is in Collier County Prison awaiting extradition to Snyder County, according to police.
