— ELYSBURG — Two people died this morning when their pickup truck struck a tree, flipped onto its roof, caught fire and was destroyed by flames.

The one-vehicle crash occurred at about 11:20 a.m. on Rushtown Road between Logan Run Road and Bellas Hollow Road in Rush Township.

Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley, who pronounced both dead at the scene, planned to transport the bodies to Geisinger-Shamokin Hospital in an effort to attempt to identify the victims.

Skid marks showed the truck had been traveling in the direction of Logan Run Road, lost control, struck the tree off the right side of the road, overturned and slid some distance into the left lane.

The accident scene was roped off by yellow police tape and traffic detoured for about two hours.

Kelley said he hoped to identify the victims through jewelry or possibly tattoos. Assisted by Chief Deputy Coroner James Gotlob, Kelley said he didn’t know when they would be identified.

Kelley left the scene at about 1:30 p.m. A wrecker began removing the wreckage of the older truck at that time. Fire and emergency services personnel at the scene believed it was a full-size Dodge model.

Kroh said that when he arrived, the truck was fully engulfed in “high flames.” Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. Kroh said the victims were dead when he got there.

The first fire apparatus at the scene was Overlook Fire Company. Besides the Elysburg company, Southside Fire Company of Riverside responded.

Kroh estimated 20 fire and rescue personnel responded including a Danville ambulance and an Elysburg ambulance.
