State voter ID trial approaches its midpoint

HARRISBURG — More testimony about the multimillion-dollar campaign to publicize Pennsylvania’s voter-identification law is expected as a trial on its constitutionality reaches its midpoint.

Friday is the fifth day of testimony in what is expected to be a nine-day Commonwealth Court trial on a lawsuit seeking to overturn the law.

On Thursday, Deputy Secretary of State Shannon Royer testified that last year’s federally funded $5 million multimedia campaign to educate voters about the law was a success in spite of continuing uncertainty about its status. Royer said his agency has budgeted only about half that much in state money for voter outreach in the November election and the 2013 primary.

Enforcement of the 16-month-old law was blocked by court orders in last year’s presidential election and the May primary.
