SELINSGROVE — The Selinsgrove school board Monday approved a final $37.47 million spending plan for 2013-14 and inked a five-year deal to extend Business Manager Jeffrey Hummel’s contract.
Spending is up $1.04 million, or 2.9 percent, and will increase taxes in the district an average $35 a year. Personnel costs make up nearly 74 percent of the total budget, with major increases in retirement costs, employee salaries and wages and medical insurance expenses.
The five board members in attendance, President Paul Spiegel Jr., Larry Augustine, Mary Bannon, Roger Sheesley and Todd Shimko, voted unanimously in favor of adopting the budget.
They also agreed to retain Hummel, who was hired in January 1999, for another five years, effective Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2018.
Hummel’s annual pay will rise from $99,391 to $105,357 in January; by $6,000 in the second year of the agreement; 3.48 percent in the third year and increase based on several factors, including education funding, in each of the last two years of the contract.
The board voted last month to extend Superintendent Chad Cohrs’ contract for another three years and give him a 2.1 percent raise, to $124,664 annually, effective July 1.
Merit increases will be determined by the rate of education funding, consumer price index and average wages.
Under the terms of the contract, Cohrs will pay 3 percent of his health care costs for the first two years and the third year will be based on changes in the district’s insurance plan.
