Suspect in city robbery: Drug habit to blame

SUNBURY — When Duayne Faust couldn’t pry open the convenience-store cash register he was trying to rob early Friday morning, the city resident grabbed a handful of lottery tickets and ran out the door, Sunbury police said.

During the 1:17 a.m. robbery at Turkey Hill on North Front Street, the 25-year-old was recognized by a store clerk and was later arrested at his home at 1114 Edison Ave., police said.

Faust was charged with a felony count of robbery and misdemeanor charges of theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and simple assault. If convicted of all charges, Faust could face 15 years in prison.

He robbed the store to support his drug habit, Faust told police.

Faust entered the convenience store, walked behind the counter and, when the clerk tried to stop him, he pushed her out of the way, court documents said.

The clerk tried to talk Faust out of robbing the store, police said, but he ignored her and continued to try to open the register, court documents said.

The clerk told police when Faust couldn’t open the register, he grabbed lottery tickets from underneath the counter and ran.

Officers reviewed the video surveillance cameras and also recognized Faust, court documents state.

Police went to Faust’s home and took him into custody without incident, court documents said.

“I’m sorry to the officers for the inconvenience I put you through,” Faust told Sunbury police officers Travis Bremigen and Cpl. Brad Hare during his arraignment before District Judge Ben Apfelbaum.

“I have a drug problem and hope you all will help me.”

Faust told Apfelbaum: “Once you get hooked on heroin there just is no coming back. I did all of this because of heroin. I need help.”

Apfelbaum sent Faust to Northumberland County Prison in lieu of $30,000 secured bail until a preliminary hearing Nov. 26.
