New Lincoln statue being installed in Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG — A long-awaited statue of Abraham Lincoln is set to be installed at a library in Gettysburg this spring — seven score and 10 years after his famous address.

The 7-foot-6-inch-tall statue is the work of Salt Lake City artist Stanley Watts, who's been looking for a Gettysburg home for it since 2008. Now, Adams County Library System Executive Director Rob Lesher says plans are in place to have it installed at the library by April or May.

Other sites that had been considered for the statue included the American Civil War Museum, the Lincoln Train Station and Gettysburg Presbyterian Church.

Lesher says inspections were needed to prepare for the statue because of its weight — the pedestal alone weights about 6,000 pounds.

Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, 1863.
