Penn State stops work on Marcellus gas report

PITTSBURGH — Penn State University won't participate this year in an industry-funded Marcellus Shale natural gas study that has been criticized in the past.

Previous reports on the economic impacts of the gas boom had appeared under the Penn State logo, though they were funded by the Marcellus Shale Coalition.

Michael Arthur, a professor in the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, says the school can't participate now because no active Penn State faculty member worked on the project this year.

Kathryn Klaber, president of the Shale Coalition, says in a statement that much more government data is now openly available on Marcellus Shale economic impacts.

In early September a coalition opposed to gas drilling filed an official academic complaint over Penn State's past role in the studies.
