Firefighters' quick response saves Snyder County home

-- — SELINSGROVE — It wasn’t the flames he saw rolling out of a garage that struck fear into the assistant fire chief who reported the blaze he saw in Monroe Township on Wednesday.

What Jeff Eppley saw next “scared the hell out of me.”

“I saw the homeowners moving the cars out of the garage,” he said.

Eppley, of the Hummels Wharf department, called 911 at 4:50 p.m. While 50 firefighters tapped into a hydrant across the street, saving the attached house, the garage was destroyed.

Eppley was driving along App Road when he saw smoke and flames at 1 Meadowbrook Drive.

“I saw rolling flames shooting out from under the car and the garage,” he said.

That the hydrant was nearby “helped out tremendously,” he said. “These guys were able to knock this down quickly.”

Several neighbors stood outside and watched in disbelief as the garage was torn apart by firefighters making sure the flames were extinguished.

Eppley said there was only minor damage to the second floor of the home and that the fire started in the garage. He said he was not sure of the cause.

The homeowner’s name and a damage estimate were not available by deadline Wednesday. Fire departments from Hummels Wharf, Shamokin Dam, Selinsgrove, Kreamer and Freeburg responded.
