Power and telephone outages prompt backup emergency procedures

SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Department of Public Safety has set up emergency reporting stations because telephone services are not working today in portions of Shamokin, Upper Augusta Township and Point Township.

Also, free ice and water is now available to customers who do not have electrical servcies.

The telephone outages, caused by damages from heavy thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon, are not affecting cellular telephone communications. Emergenices can be reported on cell phones at 9-1-1.

Three sites have been established for residents who don’t have cell phones to report or request emergency services.

Those sites are:

— Fire stations 10/20/30 and 60 in Shamokin. They will remain open and manned until services are restored.

— The state police station, just off Route 61, Stonington.

— The Short Stop Mart at 500 Point Township Drive (Route 11) during normal business hours.

The free ice and water is now available at:

-  Weis Markets stores in Milton and Sunbury

- Short Stop Market in Northumberland

- Ice Plant of Sunbury, located along the Snydertown Road

- Watsontown Short Stop on Main Street.

Residents are reminded to use caution with candles during the outages. Use generators outdoors only to avoide carbon monoxide poisoning.
