Sunbury Celebration begins today

SUNBURY — The 11th annual Sunbury Celebration kicks off today with a splash.

Beginning at 3 p.m., Sunbury will celebrate “Family Fun Night,” with free hot dogs, games and prizes at the Oppenheimer Pleasure Grounds on North Second Street.

And that’s only the beginning because the rest of the weekend is packed with action, said Sunbury Celebration chairwoman Jodi Scholvin.

“I can’t wait for these events,” she said. “It is so exciting.”

Those events include a dance on Saturday for children grades 3-6 at the YMCA Degenstein Youth Center, the first skate park event in more than a decade, a Zumba marathon, the Ta-Ta Trot, a 5K run/walk, and a $15,000 fireworks display.

The dance is a new event for the celebration and Scholvin said there is a limit on the number of children who will be admitted.

“The first 100 students will be allowed through the door,” she said. “A parent or guardian must sign their child into the event.”

On Saturday, more than 20 vendors will set up at the David L. Persing Recreational Complex on North Fourth Street, Scholvin said. “This is a great day for all the families,” she said.

The Ta-Ta Trot will start the day off at 6 a.m., and about 9:30 p.m., Scholvin plans to sit back and watch the fireworks display.

On Sunday, Soapbox Derby races will be held, starting at 11 a.m., at 10th and Market streets. Participants can register in advance or between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The one thing that has Scholvin concerned is that the committee is short nearly $10,000 to pay for everything, but she said the show will go on.

“I understand that it is tough out there but we are asking that if anyone can make a donation to please help us.”

Donations can be made at the city clerk’s office at 225 Market St., Sunbury.
