— McCLURE — Fire destroyed a storage barn and threatened to burn a nearby house off Route 522 in McClure this morning.

Flames were noticed shooting out of the barn about 150 yards off Route 522 by a passing motorist at about 8:15 a.m., Beaver Springs Assistant Fire Chief Brian Thomas said.

James Fuhrman, owner of the property at 23947 Route 522, McClure, was not home at the time, he said.

The barn was nearly burned down by the time firefighters from Beaver Springs, McClure, Beavertown, Bannerville, Middleburg, Decatur and Fayette arrived.

A live power line was brought down as a result of the fire, causing PPL to turn off the power as firefighters battled the blaze.

The heat of the flames melted two walls of the nearby house, Thomas said, but the structure was saved.

“We’re very fortunate to have this many (firefighters) here this morning,” he said.

He said a lightening strike the night before may have sparked the blaze. State police fire Marshal Kirk Renn said he’ll be at the site today to determine the cause.
