PORT TREVORTON — A car struck two horses on a rural road in Snyder County Thursday afternoon, injuring the driver and resulting in the death of the horses.
A late model Dodge Intrepid, operated by Daniel E. Kantz, 50, of Mount Pleasant Mills, was driving south down Aqueduct Road near Port Trevorton, when the vehicle collided with a two-horse drawn manure wagon.
Police said Clarence Martin, 60, of Selinsgrove, stopped a horse-drawn manure spreader on the road and was working on the farm machine when the Kantz car crested the top of a hill and failed to stop before striking the horses.
The horses were injured during the accident and one of them was visible on the hood of the Kantz vehicle.
Because they suffered serious injuries, the draft horses were euthanized at the scene.
Kantz was transported by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Martin was not injured, police said.
State police said Martin will be cited for stopping the farm machine and standing on the road while Kantz will be cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.
The Port Trevorton Fire Company and DH&L, Hook and Ladder, of Selinsgrove assisted at the scene.
